'Fairlea' Finished

(written by Jason Dodd)

The property previously had an unsightly 1950s bungalow within its boundaries. The brief from the client was to gain planning permission to replace this outdated building with a crisp and contemporary luxury dwelling of a significant scale. The main problem with the client’s desire for a sizeable unit of accommodation was the relative narrowness of the site. This required a far more inventive internal spatial arrangement.

The building is effectively a series of staggered boxes with subtly varying articulation with a double height circulation space running through the centre of the building. I decided in this instance that it would be appropriate to design a building with Art Deco influences, which would be in keeping with its seaside location and also relevant from an historic perspective, as there are a number of fine examples of this Architectural genre across the island of Jersey.

The timber clad vertical element defines the circulation space within and is intended to reflect conceptually the Martello Towers that are positioned along this part of the coastline, acting as a coastal marker for shipping.
