The founder of Pink Wig is Sally Hicks-Wood and here is her story:
Sally's Story
'I’m Sally Hicks-Wood, a 50 year old mum of 2 and the founder of Pink Wig 2012. The events that have shaped my life over the last 3 years are the reasons for my passion and commitment to this cause and this is the story of my journey.......
In May 2009 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This bombshell came completely out of the blue and without any warning. I was told I had to have surgery to remove a lump in my left breast which, at the time, was thought to be at an early stage. So with that knowledge my good friend Kim got the girls together and suggested a girlie night out before I went into hospital to begin my 'journey'. Everyone wore pink wigs and that night I was amazed and touched that about 45 friends turned up and we had a ball! Several onlookers asked if we were anything to do with a breast cancer charity and expressed a wish to donate. It was this generosity that gave me the idea to make the night out an annual charity event.
Once I had undergone my initial surgery, it transpired that the cancer was more serious than the initial diagnosis and had in fact spread throughout my breast and into all my lymph nodes, which now meant a mastectomy and node clearance. In the words of my oncologist, it had gone vascular and was "looking for somewhere to make more trouble" i.e, one of my major organs. Although these are words that none of us ever want to, or dream we'll hear, in a strange way it was better than a lottery win, after all, if I hadn’t been caught during that window of time, I wouldn’t be here now telling you my story. Who needs the lottery? I have already won the best prize you can win - life.
During my chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments and subsequent surgeries, I became hugely passionate about raising money for a breast cancer charity so that in some small way, I can give something back to the people who saved my life and to help future generations. My dream is a future without breast cancer, a vaccine to erradicate this sneaky disease that invades 1 woman in 8, and figures are rising. There are hundreds of research projects and trials running right now, but nothing can succeed without consistent funding, which is where us 'Pink Wiggers' can help!
Year 2 of pink wig in 2010 was hugely successful, we raised just over £1,000 in just 4 short hours and everyone had such a great time. We knew we were onto a winner with the perfect pink cocktail of 'girls just wanna have fun' and being proud of what we can acheive whilst doing it! Year 3, 2011, was taken a small step further in-as- much-as we included a daytime collection by Pink Wiggers in town, in the rain! With the help of the daytime collection, St.Mary's school pupils holding a 'Wear It Pink' day, the sale of t-shirts and donations from attendees, we raised £2,500!! We still have to add the money that we have raised for the sky dive to that figure before the campaign are presented with the cheque. Its incredible how everyone has become so enthusiastic and passionate about this and I have learned so much during this process, not only about myself, but about others too.
We now have a Committee of talented and enthusiastic people, with a variety of skill sets and contacts, I couldn’t wish for better support. With this and all our plans for the future, we may just see that dream come true. I have committed myself to do this for as long as it takes or 'UNTIL WE ARE ALL SAFE'.'
Ssssshhhhhhh...here is a sneeky peek at the poster design!
