and 3rd Place goes to Kieran Burley…
What a great achievement for our year 10 work placement Kieran Burley who joined us for one week earlier this year. Kieran was awarded 3rd place in the RIBA Cornwall Branch Work Experience Competition 2012. The brief was to design an information kiosk to be used at the London Olympics.
Below you can read Kieran’s design statement which details his successful sustainable concept.
‘The kiosk was designed around the 2012 Olympic logo, it was chosen because it would be eye catching and be easily recognised as an information kiosk. It will be constructed from locally sourced FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) timber frame with recycled extruded aluminium roof. To make the kiosk sustainable, there are solar panels installed all along the roof which can easily be seen from the ground to promote using sustainable energy sources. On the side of the kiosk is an Olympic bike which is detachable so the kiosk fits in the truck for transport. The bike also produces kinetic energy when ridden by the public, to promote this there is a screen with a challenge in front of the bike where the public have to beat a certain score, and this promotes sustainable energy by trying to make it fun. The kiosk has a large PA sound system on the roof which has 360 degree radius so everyone can hear the announcements. The kiosk has a large screen on the side of the building to display information for the day that can easily be seen. There is an office on the side of the kiosk for safety and it contains the laptops and telecommunication equipment. There are plenty of shelves and storage for merchandise. The posters on the sides of the kiosk are changed to promote the events going on each day’.
The judge’s commented on the ‘really good design’ and awarded him a massive 37 out of 40 for it. They also awarded 13 out of 15 for compliance with the brief and a fantastic 9 out of 10 for the written explanation.
The competition was organised and hosted by Catchfrench Design and the judges were Clive Malim of Clive Malim Architects, Catherine Woods of the RIBA Plymouth Branch and Holly Day from Pirate FM.
All the judges were impressed with the overall standard and quality of submissions for the competition this year, showing innovative interpretation of the brief and a good standard of overall presentation.

Entries will also be displayed on the RIBA Cornwall Facebook page and a photo of the judging is also on the Pirate FM gallery http://www.piratefm.co.uk/gallery/-/holly-day-at-work-/#f3995370
