This year’s brief was to design a modern beach hut suitable for a Cornish coastal location. The beach hut would sit within a row of 20 beach huts along the top of the beach. RIBA wanted the students to present ideas of how the design could be easily customised, by the owners, in order to create an individual design yet still form part of a cohesive set of beach huts.
The specifics of the brief were as follows:
- It will need to accommodate four people during the day and the occasional overnight stay for two people.
- Space for 2 deck chairs, small table, general storage, drinks making space, inside or outside shower, surfboard storage space, hooks for towels and wetsuits.
- Some dedicated outside space large enough for the two deck chairs.
- It should be possible to close up/lock up the beach hut so it is secure when not in use.
- The size of the entire plot is 6 metres by 4 metres, and the overall height of the main structure should be kept below 3.5 metres.
- The chosen materials should have a lifespan of about 10 years with regular maintenance.
With all this in mind the students set about creating some unique designs and here are their entries.
We think they look great; we are not at all biased but... ‘COME ON TEAM CAD!’
(The winners will be announced in September so everything is crossed and we will keep you posted).
