Permanent home for unique history of groundbreaking arts school

A competition has been launched to find an architect to compose a worthy design for the permanent Bauhaus Museum in Weimar, Germany. A temporary museum was set up in 1995 however recent funding through a specific programme run by the German government and the state of Thuringia has enabled the Klassik Stiftung Weimar Foundation to hold a competition to find an architect capable of designing a long-term home for the unique collection of historical information and artefacts from Staatliches Bauhaus (Bauhaus).

 

Founded in 1919 and closed in 1933, Bauhaus was a successful arts school in Germany which became renowned worldwide for its unique stylistic approach to design in the fields of architecture, interior design, art, graphic design and typography.

The first stage of the competition requires architects to form a fundamental design concept for the Weimar Bauhaus Museum, selecting a suitable location from the given site and arranging the additional open spaces. Stage One is also to include an appraisal of sites for a possible future extension and kindergarten. Stage Two will continue into greater design detail, with concepts judged on their architectural innovation and sustainable, energy-saving qualities.

To be eligible to take part, candidates must reside in the EU, Switzerland, an EEA member country or a GATT signatory country and be entitled to use the title ‘Architect’ according to the architectural laws of that country, or be entitled to work as an architect in the Federal republic of Germany according to EC directives, including, but not limited to, the Directive on the Mutual Recognition of Diplomas in Architecture.
