CAD Architects: Kingdom Tower v Truro Cathedral

Due to open in 2020, the Kingdom Tower is set to become the world’s tallest building.

Standing at over a kilometre tall,  and with a total construction area of 530,000 square metres, the Tower will be the centrepiece of the Kingdom City development in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It will tower above the world’s current tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, by a whopping 173 metres.

Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the Tower will be a multipurpose building featuring a luxury hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums, office space and the world’s highest observatory. The total cost has been estimated at $1.23 billion.

At 76 metres high Cornwall’s tallest building- situated just two minutes away from CAD’s offices in the heart of Truro- seems a mere dot in comparison. Truro Cathedral was opened in 1910, some 30 years after the foundation stone was laid, at an estimated total cost of £200,000. The gothic revival structure, which incorporates sections of the ancient Parish Church of St Mary’s, became the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.

Just for fun we have been pondering what it might take to get planning permission for a Kingdom Tower in Cornwall. The first obstacle could be the planning drawings themselves; for a 1,000 metre tall building the 1:100 scale elevation drawings that would be requested by the Council would need to be taller than two double-decker buses!

  1. Knowing Cornwall Council...they'd ask that you set up a height marker for the "Viewing Panel" if you were thinking of a Kingdom Tower for Cornwall. I suggest hanging the proposal down from a helium balloon or a hovering helicopter; it’s only about 7 rolls of paper on an HP plotter.

    1. We better place a stationery order then Mark! Wouldn't it be an amazing project to be involved with - we suspect that it may cause a few headaches during the construction stages though!
