My Work Placement - by our guest blogger Hannah Pascoe

Just two years ago, when I was doing my year 10 work experience in my old primary school, never did I think I’d be sat here two years later, doing administration work at an architects, and writing an article for their blog. As much as I loved working in a primary school for two weeks, I wanted to try something completely different. And so, I am here.

My week here so far, hasn’t exactly gone to plan after a bike accident on Monday made me arrive very late, and then on the Wednesday I was sent home ill! But when I finally did get here on Monday, I was greeted by the lovely faces of Elina and Tanya. Just ten minutes into my work experience, I noticed I knew nothing about the company, or much about what administration work, entailed of. I do heavily English based A-Levels in Business Studies, Sociology and English Literature, so I am used to writing 3,000 word essays. And so, when I was faced with a spreadsheet on excel and files full of decimals, I was frightened to say the least. I’m not exactly a Mathematical genius, which I believe you need to be when faced with decimals – Or anything with numbers really! But, after it was all explained, I think I did okay.

On my first day, I was taken upstairs by Tanya, and introduced to all the REALLY brainy people… And I was told a ‘Barry Sheen’ joke, which kind of flew over my head, as it was a bit before my time. About ten minutes later everyone noticed I didn’t have a CLUE who Barry Sheen actually was, especially after someone older than me asked “Isn’t that a form of polish?” It turns out ‘Mr. Sheen’ IS a polish, and ‘Barry Sheen’ was a famous motorcyclist. – It was a joke about my accident that morning…

I have learnt that when working in an environment like this, administration work is a lot harder than it seems. When I arrive in the morning Tanya and Elina are usually already typing away, when somebody else comes into reception and places more things on their desk for them to do. I have noticed it’s all about prioritising and getting through things as fast as you can, else they would just fall behind with work. But, even if they ever did fall behind with work, Classic FM is always there to keep you calm, with Mozart blasting his tunes all day.

Working in the reception with Elina and Tanya has been a blast. Elina has a different outfit, with a colour co-ordinated bag, and a pair of shoes - each day – without fail. Not to mention Tanya’s stylish outfits with all her jewellery and the smile that never leaves her face. I believe that it is things like this which keeps working here, fun. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment when you close a spreadsheet.

I can’t thank CAD Architects enough, for having me here and letting me get an insight in to the kind of skills needed when working here. I’d highly recommend coming here for work experience, so that other people can also have the valuable insight, into what could potentially be their career. The majority of things I have learnt are related to working in the reception, and so I don’t have many things to say about the work that the company is actually here for, but It’s hard to believe that this is only my fourth day here, and I already have so many positive things to say, I’m used to writing essays, so writing things in a short and punchy form, never has been my strong point! but I won’t keep you here any longer…
